When my students tell me that they are not a math person... I try to relate what we are doing in math with what they are doing in video games or when using their cellphones. They don't have the best understanding of their phones or the video game the first time they try. They don't pass the first level at the first try, generally. So, math is exactly the same. They need to practice and go little by little from the beginning to a point where they feel comfortable. From there they will start building their own knowledge and they will obtain better performance... it just takes time.
