Images and other media in the National Science Foundation Multimedia Gallery are available for use in print and electronic material by NSF employees, members of the media, university staff, teachers and the general public. All media in the gallery are intended for personal, educational and nonprofit/non-commercial use only.
Videos credited to the National Science Foundation, an agency of the U.S. Government, may be distributed freely. However, some materials within the videos may be copyrighted. If you would like to use portions of NSF-produced programs in another product, please contact the Video Team in the Office of Legislative and Public Affairs at the National Science Foundation.

Through the years: NSF’s McMurdo Station
The U.S. Antarctic Program, managed by the National Science Foundation, maintains three year-round stations in Antarctica, including McMurdo Station, established in 1956 by the U.S. Navy and an operational hub and logistics center for research on the continent. McMurdo is located on volcanic Ross Island in the southwest corner of the Ross Sea, with a population that ranges over the year from roughly 230 to about 900 people. McMurdo contains more than 80 buildings, and supports research in aeronomy, astrophysics and geospace sciences, biology and ecosystems, geology and geophysics, glaciology, and oceanography.
