Portion of prototype mass spectrometer
A portion of a prototype mass spectrometer developed and constructed in the laboratory of Brian T. Chait, a professor at Rockefeller University. This type of instrument is produced by several different commercial manufacturers and is widely used to analyze biopolymers such as peptides, proteins, oligosaccharides and oligonucleic acids.
Mass spectrometry is a powerful analytical technique that can accurately measure the molecular masses of individual biomolecules, including peptides, proteins and large intact protein assemblies. Chaits lab specializes in the development of mass spectrometers and other tools and methods for investigating a variety of biological and biochemical phenomena.
