South Dakota EPSCoR Materials Reserch

Jon Kellar, a faculty investigator at South Dakota School of Mines and Technology, conducts a multiscale (molecular-nanometer-micrometer) investigation on the interphase and its relationship to polymer matrix composite performance. The necessary fiber optic accessory was developed by this research group and is used to measure polymer curing and chemical reactions. The research will enable the design of improved composite materials.

Kellar received support from the National Science Foundation (NSF) through the Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research (EPSCoR) (grants EPS 94-52894 and EPS 97-20642). His most recent NSF research award was titled "A Multi-Scale Approach for Understanding the Role of the Interphase in Polymer Matrix Composites" (CMMI 99-00383).
