Los Pinos Mountain Front, Looking South
The Los Pinos Mountain front, with a view looking south on the Sevilleta Long Term Ecological Research (LTER) site in New Mexico.
The Sevilleta LTER is located about 80 kilometers south of Albuquerque, N.M., in and around the Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuge (NWR). The refuge, managed by the U.S. Department of the Interior Fish and Wildlife Service, and its surroundings, are positioned at the intersection of several major biotic zones: Chihuahuan Desert grassland and shrubland to the south, Great Plains grassland to the north, PiƱon-Juniper woodland in the upper elevations of the neighboring mountains, Colorado Plateau shrub-steppe to the west, and riparian vegetation along the middle Rio Grande Valley.
The Los Pinos Mountain-Front Recharge study, conducted by C. Duffy, is part of the SAHRA Science and Technology Center research effort under National Science Foundation (NSF) grant EAR 98-76800. The study area is on the Sevilleta LTER site (supported by NSF grant DEB 02-17774). For more information, visit the Sevilleta LTER website. (Date of Image: June 2004)
