REU participants on Niwot Ridge
Participants of the National Science Foundation-supported Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) Program rest atop Niwot Ridge, west of Boulder, Colo. The picture is taken looking northwest from Niwot Ridge over Lake Isabelle toward Pawnee Peak and the Continental Divide. The area in the background is in the Indian Peaks Wilderness Area, Arapaho and Roosevelt National Forests.
The REU program is based at the University of Colorado's Mountain Research Station, which is located at 2900 meters (9500 feet) in the Front Range of the Colorado Rockies. The Mountain Research Station is an interdisciplinary facility of the Institute of Arctic and Alpine Research that provides research and educational opportunities for scientists, students and the general public.
Niwot Ridge is also the site of an NSF-funded Long Term Ecological Research (LTER) project and is a Biosphere Reserve (sites established by countries and recognized under UNESCO's Man and the Biosphere Programme). (Date of Image: July 2003)
