Polyphemus Moths (Antheraea polyphemus)
These two polyphemus moths (Antheraea polyphemus) were observed mating for more than an hour.
A. polyphemus is a member of the Saturniidae family, or giant silk moths. They are tan colored with large, purplish eyespots on their two hind wings. Their wingspan averages 6 inches (15 centimeters). [Photo taken in Alexandria, Va., with an Olympus C-3000 digital camera.] (Date of Image: May 2004)
