RENCI (Image 2)
Visitors to the Social Computing Room at the Renaissance Computing Institute (RENCI) get a 360-degree bird's-eye view of downtown London taken from the top of St. Paul's Cathedral. The walls of the room act as a continuous desktop, and can project high-resolution photos, scientific visualizations, spreadsheets, newsfeeds or even artwork. RENCI uses the room as a tool for a range of activities including research, education, decision support, arts and the humanities.
Founded in 2004, the Renaissance Computing Institute is a major collaborative venture of Duke University, North Carolina State University, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and the state of North Carolina. It combines the strengths of state initiatives and three world-class universities with the social, business and research opportunities of the Research Triangle and the state of North Carolina. The "renaissance" in RENCI evokes both its collaborative atmosphere and the breadth of its intellectual activities. (Date of Image: March 2008) [See related image Here.]
