King penguins on Macquarie Island
King penguins on Macquarie Island, located in the southwest corner of the Pacific Ocean, about half-way between Australia and Antarctica. King penguins can reach a height of 95 centimeters (27.5 inches) and a weight of 12 kilograms (26 pounds).
King penguin studies is just one example of the many research projects supported by the National Science Foundation's U.S. Antarctic Program (USAP). Other Antarctic study areas are aeronomy and astrophysics, biology and medicine, geology and geophysics, glaciology, and ocean and climate systems.
