Bering Sea Jellyfish Population
Map showing increase in jellyfish populations since the 1980s. Jellyfish populations peaked in 2000. They have since moderated at levels that still exceed those of the 1980s. In addition, jellyfish ranges have expanded. Scientists suspect that increasing water temperatures may influence jellyfish population.
This image accompanied NSF press release, "Scientists Discover Stinging Truths About Jellyfish Blooms in the Bering Sea." Further information about the increase in jellyfish populations worldwide and the problems they are causing is also available in the NSF Special Report "Jellyfish Gone Wild!"
