International Research Experiences for Students
Titus Ndiwa (left) and Hank Bart (right) of Tulane University take pond samples in Karen Suburb of Nairobi, Kenya.
Bart, a professor of ecology and evolutionary biology and a taxonomist, traveled to Kenya with four students from Tulane and Xavier Universities in the summer of 2010 as part of an International Research Experiences for Students award funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF). While there, they worked with collaborators at the National Museums of Kenya and the University of Nairobi.
The team collected samples of fish from different river basins and based on preliminary evidence, identified at least three new species of freshwater fish with molecular genetic differences from other species. They followed up with morphological studies, looking at the shape and other external characteristics of the fish specimens they brought back to the lab at Tulane.
