On its 66th birthday, National Science Foundation living up to envisioned legacy
First class of research fellows set the standard for NSF excellence

In 1951, the National Science Foundation started operations in a residential structure at the corner of 16th and I Street, N.W. in Washington, D.C. Later that year it moved to this building at 2144 California Street, N.W., and from here, NSF awarded its first research grants.
