You may have noticed that it has been awhile since OCE last issued our pdf newsletter, “Making Waves”.  In the newsletter, we would post topics of interest to the community, including program announcements, new personnel at NSF, and other matters.   However, the process of issuing the formal newsletter was cumbersome and often resulted in the material being outdated even before it was released.  Furthermore, many years ago OCE appropriately stopped snail-mailing hard copy issues of the newsletter, and therefore the only folks who received it in pdf format were in fact those who subscribed to the OCE listserver.

Accordingly, over the past year we have been slowly moving to a communications process based on the NSF OCE web site ( https://www.nsf.gov/div/index.jsp?div=OCE ).  All future division and program announcements will be issued via this site.  New announcements, including the traditional occasional “Director’s Message”, will show up in the “Announcements” section.  Links to OCE policies, reports, career opportunities, and GEO documents are provided under the “Popular Links” section.  Past editions of the newsletter will continue to be available in the “Making Waves” Newsletter Archive ( https://www.nsf.gov/geo/oce/making-waves-archive.jsp ).

Even with the new website approach, we still plan to send out important messages via the OCE listserv. If you are subscribed, you will still get emails to communicate key announcements such as Dear Colleague Letters, Solicitations, and other matters at the same time that we post such items on the website. We do not anticipate increasing the frequency of email that you will receive via the listserv.

We appreciate your patience as we grow into this new communications approach.  As you may imagine, there are boundaries on the structure and content of any Federal agency’s web site(s), and ours is no exception.  Nonetheless, this system promises to at least be more current than the “Making Waves” newsletter, which will no longer be issued.
