Six of the recent Presidential Early Career Awards for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE) winners announced by the White House were supported by NSF’s Directorate for Geosciences: Whitney Behr, University of Texas at Austin (now at ETH Zurich); Nicolas Cassar, Duke University; Matthew Kirwan, College of William & Mary; Erinn Muller, Mote Marine Laboratory & Aquarium; Maitane Olabarrieta, University of Florida; and Mary-Louise Timmermans, Yale University. PECASE recognizes outstanding scientists and engineers who show exceptional promise for leadership in science and technology. NSF supported 80 of the 314 (25%) recipients from the 2015, 2016 and 2017 cohorts.

NSF’s Earth Sciences is developing outreach materials for professional meetings and for use during the Foundation’s upcoming 70th anniversary communications campaign (#BroughtToYouByNSF). Please send us communication leads regarding NSF-funded research, education and infrastructure. Leads may include: research highlights; images, illustrations, and infographics; videos; fact sheets and handouts; social media posts; etc. We also need small, significant artifacts for new, 70th-anniversary display cases at NSF headquarters. Please send ideas to ear-communication@nsf.gov, and feel free float any idea.

Who You Gonna Call? Earth Sciences welcomes Laura Lautz from Syracuse University as a permanent program director for the Hydrologic Sciences (HS) program. Ingrid Padilla and Lautz will now manage the HS award portfolio. NSF thanks Holly Barnard for her service as a rotating HS program director. Barnard recently returned to the University of Colorado-Boulder.

The National Academies of Sciences Catalyzing Opportunities for Research in the Earth Sciences (CORES) Committee held its fifth meeting in Washington, DC. Sessions focused on leveraging partnerships, and cyberinfrastructure and data sciences. We encourage the Earth Sciences research community to check the CORES study web page and sign up for updates.

The CORES committee will host a Town Hall at the Annual GSA Conference in Phoenix, Arizona. Please join committee members on Sunday, Sept. 22 at 6:00 pm in Room 128AB, North Building to provide input to the study.

The new Critical-Zone Collaborative Network program solicitation, NSF 19-586, from the Division of Earth Sciences is on the street. Proposals are invited by Dec. 2, 2019, addressing either of two components: 1) Thematic Cluster or 2) Coordinating Hub. Thematic Clusters will carry out interdisciplinary research on scientific questions and manage part of the network infrastructure.
