Please join NSF/OCE in welcoming Dr. Kanchan Maiti as a rotating program officer with the Chemical Oceanography program.  Dr. Maiti is Associate Professor and Shell Professor in Oceanography/Wetland Studies in the Department of Oceanography & Coastal Sciences at Louisiana State University (LSU). Dr. Maiti’s interests over his career have ranged from hard-rock geochemistry to blue water oceanography to coastal carbon cycling. His laboratory group at LSU focuses on understanding the fate and transport of different forms of carbon in coastal and deep ocean environments, with current research themes of: upper ocean particle dynamics and the biological pump; fate and transport of organic matter and contaminants in aquatic systems; utilization of artificial and natural radioisotopes to study environmental processes; sediment geochemistry and chemical processes at the sediment-water interface. At LSU, he currently serves as the Associate Director of Undergraduate Program in the College of Coast and Environment. He is also Associate Editor for Marine Chemistry.

 

Dr. Maiti’s scientific expertise and community leadership will be a great benefit to OCE at a critical time for oceanographic research, technology, and education. Dr. Maiti replaces Dr. Elizabeth Canuel, who has returned to the Virginia Institute of Marine Science / College of William and Mary after completing her rotator term earlier this summer.
