Welcome to OCEan News!

OCEan News is a new quarterly newsletter about science and scientists funded by NSF’s Division of Ocean Sciences (OCE).

In this first issue, we feature some of the cutting-edge scientific studies published in Fall 2020, as well as a significant new project funded by OCE. We also feature a letter by OCE Director Dr. Terry Quinn about the challenges that the COVID-19 pandemic has posed to the ocean science community and what the NSF is doing to help those scientists whose research has been affected.

We are very interested in highlighting the research funded by OCE to the broader public. If you have recently published a paper that acknowledges OCE funding, and you think the conclusions would be of interest to the general public, please send a copy to Chris Parsons at ecparson@nsf.gov.

We are interested in amplifying and publicizing studies from members of the ocean science community, especially scientists from universities lacking significant communications infrastructure.

The U.S. National Science Foundation propels the nation forward by advancing fundamental research in all fields of science and engineering. NSF supports research and people by providing facilities, instruments and funding to support their ingenuity and sustain the U.S. as a global leader in research and innovation. With a fiscal year 2023 budget of $9.5 billion, NSF funds reach all 50 states through grants to nearly 2,000 colleges, universities and institutions. Each year, NSF receives more than 40,000 competitive proposals and makes about 11,000 new awards. Those awards include support for cooperative research with industry, Arctic and Antarctic research and operations, and U.S. participation in international scientific efforts.
