Colleagues,

We hope all is well as we begin the transition from Summer to Fall.  We have a few quick announcements to pass along.

NSF/AGS Management

Following Anne Johansen’s transition to the position of AGS Division Director, we are pleased to announce that Soumaya Belmecheri will be serving as the Acting Atmosphere Section Head.

Since 2019, Dr. Belmecheri served as an IPA Program Director for the Paleoclimate Program in AGS during which time she led the revamping of the GEO-wide P4CLIMATE solicitation and, amongst others, played key roles in AGS outreach and broadening participation activities. She comes to NSF from her position as an Assistant Research Scientist at the University of Arizona, and she has held appointments at Pennsylvania State University and the Museum of Natural History of Paris.  Dr. Belmecheri received her Ph.D. and M.S. in Geosciences from the University of Orsay in France, and her B.S. in Geology from The University of Algiers in Algeria.

Funding Opportunities

NSF has released the Paleo Perspectives on Present and Projected Climate (P4CLIMATE) solicitation, which effectively replaces the prior P2C2 solicitation.  The goal of the interdisciplinary P4CLIMATE solicitation is to utilize observational and modeling studies to provide paleo perspectives addressing the two research themes: 1) Past Regional and Seasonal Climate; and 2) Past Climate Forcing, Sensitivity, and Feedbacks.  Two office hours on the P4CLIMATE solicitation will be held in September (details TBD).

Office Hour

The NSF Geospace Section (GS) will host a second virtual office hour this year on Thursday September 8^th, 1:00pm-2:00pm EDT to give a brief update on current GS activities and answer any GS-related questions from the U.S. research community.  Geospace Program Directors will be available to answer program-specific questions, such as about the GEM and SHINE solicitations that have upcoming target dates.  Registration is required in advance of this meeting:  https://nsf.zoomgov.com/meeting/register/vJIsc-Gqpj4sGNU6AgdGLYYd94AdZ3zeRRI
