NSF/AGS Update Late April 2023 - Dear Colleague Letter season

May 1, 2023

Colleagues,

We hope you are well.  Dear Colleague Letters (DCLs) are a popular method at NSF to convey information to the community.  Per the NSF PAPPG:  DCLs are intended to provide general information to the community, clarify or amend an existing policy or document, or inform the NSF proposer community about upcoming opportunities or special competitions for supplements to existing awards. They also may be used to announce NSF’s interest in receiving proposals in specified topical areas.  We mention this now because NSF is in the process of releasing a number of DCLs that will be of interest to our community.  A few of the newest ones include:

  • Dear Colleague Letter: Physical and Dynamic Meteorology Update on Modeling Tools and Support (NSF 23-095).  This DCL clarifies that the Physical and Dynamic Meteorology (PDM) program is open to proposals that make use of any modeling system that will advance the relevant science, and introduces a supplemental funding opportunity for existing PDM awards to include MPAS and/or UFS/FV3 into the project.  Please see the details in the DCL and feel free to reach out to AGS-PDM@nsf.gov with questions.
  • Dear Colleague Letter: Availability of Earth Observation Data for NSF-Funded Researchers (NSF 23-092).  This DCL announces the availability of high-quality commercial Earth observation data to NSF-funded researchers at no additional cost through the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Commercial SmallSat Data Acquisition (CSDA) Program.
  • Dear Colleague Letter: Updates to the Navigating the New Arctic (NNA) Program (NSF 23-088).  This DCL announces the end of an active solicitation accepting new proposals to the NNA Program, as well as next steps for the NNA community.

These are in addition to the following previously-released, but still active DCLs:

Career Opportunity

The Directorate for Geosciences (GEO) has officially reorganized activities that were previously in the GEO Office of the Assistant Director and the Integrative and Collaborative Education and Research (ICER) lines into a new Division called Research, Innovation, Synergies, and Education (RISE).  You can read more about RISE and how it fits in with GEO in the FY24 Budget Request.  GEO has initiated a Division Director search for RISE.  This is a rotator position that will be conducted via an Intergovernmental Personnel Act (IPA) assignment.  Please consider applying if you are interested in joining the GEO leadership team and working to advance RISE’s goals in the areas of developing innovative means to initiate and support geoscience education, attracting underrepresented groups to careers in the geosciences, fostering the interchange of scientific information nationally and internationally, and joining with other parts of NSF in major integrative research and education efforts.

Please feel free to share these opportunities widely.  Thank you.

Best regards,

Division of Atmospheric and Geospace Sciences (AGS)
Directorate for Geosciences (GEO)
