GEO/AGS Early August 2023 Update: Facilities Updates and a Rotator Opportunity

August 3, 2023

Colleagues,

We hope you are well as we enter the last month of Meteorological summer.  Below are a number of updates and opportunities that we hope you will find interesting.

Outreach & Travel Opportunity

We have previously mentioned the upcoming 2023 Facilities for Atmospheric Research and Education (FARE) User’s Workshop in this space.  The workshop will be held the week of September 18th at NCAR and there will also be a virtual option.  For those who may find it difficult to participate in a full week of activities, the schedule is outlined below and the components are distinct, though we hope for as much engagement as possible.  NSF has also funded travel and per diem costs for about 40 participants (Students, Faculty, Researchers) from Minority Serving Institutions (MSI), Primarily Undergraduate Institutions (PUI), and non-R1 institutions, and this funding remains available.  Please visit the link on the User’s Workshop website to apply for travel support.

  • FARE Process (18-19 September) – This part of the workshop targets researchers who are early-career, haven’t requested AGS-funded facilities to this point, or simply want more insight into the process.  There will be an overview of the FARE program and the Facilities and Instrumentation Request Process (FIRP) solicitation by NSF personnel, facility providers, and previously successful field project PIs.
  • FARE Asset Exhibit and Data FAIR (20 September) – Wednesday will be a “show and tell” day, with exhibits at the Research Aviation Facility for airborne instrumentation/facilities, Foothill Lab for ground-based assets, a booth for data services, and a tour of the Design and Fabrication Services workshop.
  • FARE Future (21-22 September) – This will be a series of discussions leading to a workshop report about the future of observational needs in the atmospheric sciences.  Prior workshops and reports have been influential in proposals to the NSF Mid-scale Research Infrastructure program.  Please consider lending your voice to these discussions.

Program Director Rotator Opportunity

AGS is seeking a rotator candidate for a joint position of Program Director (PD) for the Climate and Large-Scale Dynamics (CLD) and Physical and Dynamic Meteorology (PDM) programs.  Beside the traditional program director roles as noted in the Dear Colleague Letter, we would like to identify a candidate with expertise in climate and/or weather modeling, who could also provide support in the oversight of NCAR’s modeling activities.  The candidate would ideally start as soon as possible.  Official application materials should be submitted per the instructions in the Dear Colleague Letter.  Questions about the position can be directed to Dr. Yu Gu, acting Section Head of the Atmosphere Section (ygu@nsf.gov).  Review of applications will begin September 1, 2023 and continue until the position is filled. NSF is an equal opportunity employer.

Funding Opportunities

The Faculty Development in geoSpace Sciences (FDSS) target deadline is September 18th, 2023.  FDSS is a unique program that offers funding for the creation of a new tenure-track faculty position at US universities and colleges.  The solicitation offers a track for all qualified US Institutes of Higher Education and additionally, a separate track for proposal submissions from Minority Serving Institutions (MSIs) and Emerging Research Institutions (ERIs).

General Announcements

  • Fastlane will be completely decommissioned for all proposals to NSF on Friday, September 29th, 2023.  If you started a proposal in Fastlane you will lose access on that date.
  • The mandate to use SciENcv only for preparation of the biographical sketch will go into effect for new proposals submitted or due on or after October 23, 2023 per the NSF PAPPG.

Thank you, and as always, please feel free to share this email widely.

Best regards,
