BIO Support for Research Experiences for K-12 Teachers

September 30, 2024

The NSF Directorate for Biological Sciences (BIO) believes that encouraging active participation of teachers in on-going NSF projects is an excellent way to strengthen the science expertise of our nation's teachers, including those at urban or rural schools and those at school districts with limited resources. Research experiences at the emerging frontiers of science can enhance the professional development of K-12 science educators in order to bring new knowledge into the classroom, thus impacting a broad range of students and supporting the next generation biological sciences workforce.

While the Research Experiences for Teachers Sites in Biological Sciences (BIORETS) has been sunsetted, BIO continues to support research experiences for K-12 teachers through supplemental funding opportunities. For more information on the availability of and how to apply for supplements for existing NSF grants, please read the Dear Colleague Letter Research Experience for Teachers (RET): Funding Opportunity in the Biological Sciences (NSF 23-146)

The U.S. National Science Foundation propels the nation forward by advancing fundamental research in all fields of science and engineering. NSF supports research and people by providing facilities, instruments and funding to support their ingenuity and sustain the U.S. as a global leader in research and innovation. With a fiscal year 2023 budget of $9.5 billion, NSF funds reach all 50 states through grants to nearly 2,000 colleges, universities and institutions. Each year, NSF receives more than 40,000 competitive proposals and makes about 11,000 new awards. Those awards include support for cooperative research with industry, Arctic and Antarctic research and operations, and U.S. participation in international scientific efforts.
