The National Science Board is saddened bythe passing of Warren Washington, a noted atmospheric scientist and former member of the National Science Board who served two terms as NSB Chair from 2002-2006. Warren was a tireless advocate for diversity in science and a dynamic leader across the research enterprise. He passed away on October 18, 2024, at the age of 88.
Trained at Oregon State University and Pennsylvania State University, Warren was a trailblazer in climate science and atmospheric modeling. His work developing atmospheric computer models is foundational to climate science and today’s understanding of climate change, and his research informed the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change’s work that was recognized with the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize. In addition to his service as a member of the National Science Board from 1994-2006, he served in numerous positions helping shape science policy and his contributions to science and the research enterprise were recognized by many awards, including the National Medal of Science in 2010.
During his two terms as NSB chair, Warren reshaped the operations of the National Science Board to better engage with Congress, the Administration, and the public. He helped craft the central pillars for evaluating research proposals that NSF uses today.
Warren was an energetic leader who understood that the decisions we make now—as educators, leaders, mentors, and role models—can shape a brighter future. His lifelong commitment to science and service is a valuable example for us all as we navigate today’s changing science and technology landscape.
